ConAlc is a microbicide formulated to eliminate populations of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is formulated with three compounds widely used in healthcare: ethanol, chlorhexidine, and cinnamaldehyde.
Alcohol interacts with the lipid layer of microorganisms, altering its structure and causing it to lose its waterproofing properties, resulting in an uncontrolled flow of substances from the cytoplasm of the microbe.
Chlorhexidine is a synthetic molecule that acts similarly to alcohol. The positive charge of chlorhexidine interacts with the negative area of the phosphate groups in the microbe’s lipid layer, disrupting it and altering the cell’s osmotic balance, thus facilitating its disintegration.
Cinnamaldehyde acts at the level of the cell nucleus, interfering with the normal function of DNA.
ConAlc contains ethanol, chlorhexidine, and cinnamaldehyde in proportions that ensure disinfection when applied as a dry rinse for 30 seconds. Washing afterward with soap and water is optional.
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as well as other coronaviruses, is an enveloped RNA virus composed of a phospholipid bilayer with several transmembrane proteins. Therefore, it is susceptible to the disinfection mechanisms of ConAlc components.
ConAlc is effective for antiseptic and surgical handwashing without rinsing. It is effective in homes, offices, or businesses as a skin disinfectant after contact with environments, surfaces, utensils, or people that pose a health risk.
